The special advisor to the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) for the Rio+20 Conference, Fernando Lyrio, is in Santiago (Chile) to participate in a regional preparatory meeting for the the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), promoted by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
The meeting in Chile brings together representatives from several Latin American and Caribbean countries. It began on Wednesday (September 7) and ends this Friday (September 9). During the three days, participants will review progress and gaps in meeting the targets set in Rio 92 and in Rio+10, held in Johannesburg (South Africa) in 2002.
A document prepared by UN agencies regarding the situation of Latin America and the Caribbean in relation to sustainability will be presented. It is expected that by the end of the meeting, the participating countries will sign a joint declaration to be presented at Rio+20, in June 2012.
