Ministers of the Environment from Brazil, South Africa, India and China will meet on August 26th and 27th in the municipality of Brumadinho, on the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, to discuss climate change. In the ministerial meeting, the group known by the acronym BASIC will have the opportunity to coordinate positions and formulate concrete proposals to be presented at the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP-17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to be held in Durban, South Africa, from November 28th to December 9th, 2011.
The group has already met seven times, and the last one was held in South Africa, in May. Brazil is now hosting the eighth meeting due to a criterion of turnover between members, and it will be attended by the Brazilian Minister of the Environment, Izabella Teixeira. "The four countries have common interests on climate change and represent an important leadership among emerging nations," said the Head of the Office for International Affairs of the Ministry, Carlos Roberto Fonseca. "Expressing their positions together, the countries can increase the political weight of the group's decisions", he says.
BASIC meetings have occurred regularly every three months and, as in previous editions, the program is divided into two phases. On August 25th, discussions between experts and negotiators from the four countries will take place. Minister Izabella Teixeira will join her counterparts on August 26th and 27th.
Inhotim - The municipality of Brumadinho, located 50 km far from the capital of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, was chosen to host the ministerial meeting for housing the Inhotim Institute, the most important outdoor center for contemporary art of South America, inserted in a botanical garden of 100 hectares. The Ministers will meet in an environment surrounded by native forest.
