An unprecedented meeting in support to the Brazilian environmental legislation gathered yesterday (May 23), in Brasília, eight former Environment ministers, members of political parties and Minister Izabella Teixeira. The group talked for half an hour on the changes in the Forest Code, to be voted by the Congress today. The former ministers will also meet President Dilma Rousseff this Tuesday (May 24).
The ministers were pleased with the meeting with Izabella Teixeira. "We're dealing with a very important issue for the future of Brazil", said Paulo Nogueira Neto, responsible for the Ministry from 1975 to 1983.
According to Izabella, the Government would "act firmly" in defense of the Forest Code. "The position of President Dilma is clear. She does not accept amnesty for those who deforest; she does not accept deforestation in areas of permanent preservation", said the minister. "We have to ensure the environmental protection in the country", she added.
