The Ministry of the Environment and the German agency Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) promote this Friday (March 18) workshop to define the actions of a technical cooperation project between Brazil and Germany carried out in the Amazon Rainforest. The meeting was opened at 9am by the Executive Secretary of the MMA, Francisco Gaetani, and continues throughout the day at the Manhattan Plaza Hotel, in Brasilia (DF).

Gaetani highlighted the presence of Germany in various actions undertaken by the Brazilian Government, particularly in the environmental area. The Executive Secretary said further that this specific project operates in a "critical area" and that's why it is so important.

The project is coordinated by the MMA, in conjunction with the GIZ, and aims to develop capacities of government and nongovernmental institutions, as well as those of the private sector, for the sustainable management of natural resources in the Amazon.

For the director of GIZ, Ulrich Krammenschneider, "the cooperation with Brazil is very important", especially in four areas: climate change, biodiversity, energy efficiency and sustainable development.

The actions and strategies set out will be implemented in partnership with the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB), the Chico Mendes Institute of Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) and state departments of Environment of Acre, Amazonas and Pará.
