As part of the programming of the ninth session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (CRIC9) in Bonn, Germany, Brazil announced yesterday (February 23) the results of the implementation of the National Action Program to Combat Desertification and Mitigate the Effects of Drought, the PAN-Brazil.

The objective was to demonstrate the importance of a broad relationship between government, civil society and international institutions for the development and implementation of actions aimed at combating desertification and mitigating the effects of droughts. Issues such as the establishment of partnerships and the mobilization of financial resources for land sustainable management have been addressed from different perspectives.

Due to Brazil's continental dimensions, the implementation of PAN-Brazil, launched in 2004, involves the joint work of the Ministries of the Environment (MMA), Social Development (MDS), National Integration (MI) and Mines and Energy (MME), and was planned from the beginning in close cooperation with the states affected by desertification.

"We want to combat desertification by using productive actions that promote local development with social inclusion and environmental sustainability", said Francisco Campello, who works for the MMA and is participating in the meeting in Boon.

"Brazil has good practices in combating desertification. This draws the attention of the international community, interested in the transfer of knowledge in this area", said Campello.

The ninth session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification ends this Friday, February 25, 2011.
