Izabella Teixeira has been Minister of the Environment since April 2010, when Minister Carlos Minc stepped down to run for a seat in the Rio de Janeiro Legislative Assembly.

She was born in Brasília, is a biologist and has a master's degree in Energy Planning and a doctorate in Environmental Planning, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

As an expert in strategic environmental assessments, she is a career employee of the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama). She was Under-secretary of the Environment in the State of Rio de Janeiro in 2007 and 2008, and Executive Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) during Minister Minc's term of one year and ten months.

Izabella has taught in graduate programs and courses at different universities, including the UFRJ and the Polytechnic School.
