For the Brazilian climate agenda, protecting the forests of the Amazon is a priority action. Therefore, as part of its contribution to the global strategy of tackling climate change effects, Brazil has been striving on different fronts to reduce deforestation in the region.
One of the most important initiatives is the Amazon Fund, theme of a presentation by the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), which will take place this Wednesday, December 9, at 4 p.m.
The Panel "Amazon Fund - a practical application of REDD initiatives" will present how this fund is being managed and how approved projects will contribute to reduce deforestation. The Brazilian Development Bank has recently announced the three first projects of the fund.
Norway was the first donor nation and, in 2008, has contributed with US$ 110 millions from a total of US$ 1 billion that is to be invested until 2015, conditioned to the presentation of results from the fight against deforestation. At present, negotiations with other countries for additional investments are at an advanced stage. Germany should also make a contribution that could reach up to 18 million Euros, which is equivalent to around US$ 30 million.
