The Brazilian minister of Environment, Carlos Minc, is attending the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP-9) in Buenos Aires (Argentina). The event began on September 21 and runs until October 2.
During the meeting, the Brazilian Government plans to announce a national pact for building a sustainable development agenda for the semi-arid region, which includes 11 Brazilian states. The Government will also report on the implementation of the National Program to Combat Desertification, which will guide the implementation of state plans to face the problem.
According to studies already published, the consequences of desertification are devastating to the northeast of Brazil. Gross Domestic Product of the region will be negatively affected as an effect of global climate change. It is expected that the local economy will suffer a downturn of up to 15%. The complete picture of the consequences of this climatic event will also be presented by the Government during COP-9.
