The first projects to benefit from the Amazon Fund will receive funding this year. The estimate of the representative of BNDES (Fund manager), Sergio Vieira, who participated on Monday (09/21) of the 5th meeting of the Amazon Fund Guidance Committee (Cofa), is that between late October and early November the money will be available so that the projects will begin to be developed. Currently, BNDES has 83 projects under evaluation.

For the Brazilian minister of Environment, Carlos Minc, having ongoing projects is an opportunity for Brazil to announce the Amazon Fund to the participants of the 15th Climate Convention (COP 15), to be held in December in Copenhagen (Denmark).

"We must show the Fund, its nature and what is expected of the project. This will show to the world and to the donors what is the purpose of the Fund and the donations will start to happen", Minc said. The Fund has US$ 110 million donated by Norway, as part of an amount of US$ 1 billion that will be given by 2015.

To ensure the fast implementation of projects, members of Cofa decided that BNDES will have a stock of products that are already prepared and ready to receive the resources of the Fund. The idea is that if there is more demand than available resources, a database will be created with projects that will receive the funding once the fund gets a new installment of the donation.

For this stock of projects a scoring system will be developed and it will define which the main projects of the list are. To Minc, this can ensure agility and rigor in the choice of projects of the fund.

Cofa accepted the proposal of some sectors to finance activities for profit. For this to happen, criteria to get resources were defined . One of them is that the project must involve activities that do not have a regular line of credit related to the risk in normal activities, explained  the consultant of the MMA Tasso Azevedo. The return was set between 10% to 50% and there has to be a guarantee that the project aims will have a collective benefit.

The site of the Amazon Fund will provide all the data of the entities and projects submitted to BNDES, as well as requested resources and the target public. The next meeting of Cofa will happen in late November in Belém (Pará).
