Last Thursday (4), the Brazilian minister of Environment, Carlos Minc, attended a hearing in which president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received a Manifesto from the Amazon Forever Movement (Movimento Amazônia para Sempre). The letter was signed by over a million people and was handed in by well-known Brazilian actors Victor Fasano and Christiane Torloni, who represent the Movement.
The Manifesto confirms many of the actions the Brazilian government has been implementing - and contains a plea: that they be intensified in this last year-and-a-half of present administration, specially as to protecting the Brazilian Forest Code, recently exposed to local state intervention in Brazil.
Lula signed the Manifesto right under ex-footballer Pelé's signature. "The president was very touched, and this Manifesto may make a great difference to this country's near future", said Minc.
