Germany is going to donate 5 million euros to Brazil so that the latter may buy equipment for recycling used refrigerators and extracting CFCs. The two countries formalized the agreement this month, establishing  that equipment will be donated to a company selected through public bidding.

The agreement's ultimate goal is to protect the ozone layer and the global climate system, eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from foam in used refrigerators. The amount of CFCs in a refrigerator is equivalent, in terms of global warming, to around three tonnes of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.

Altogether, 34 companies are competing in the process, which is being coordinated by German cooperation agency GTZ.  Selected company will be announced in May.

The agreement will contribute to Brazil´s refrigerator recycling policies, including systems for returning refrigerators, reverse manufacturing and technical training.
The equipment to be bought dismantles refrigerators, separates all its components - such as metal, plastic, oil and Mercury - and extracts CFCs present in foam. The idea is to extract over 90% of CFCs from used (over 10 years old) refrigerators.
