The Ministry of the Environment will conduct a seminar on coastal management in Brazil, in March 2011. The event is the result of a technical collaboration between Brazil and Spain, whose objective is to exchange experience and technology to map the Brazilian coast and to predict changes in the country's shore, as well as to identify areas susceptible to the effects of climate change.

Last Friday (November 5), the executive secretary of the Ministry, José Machado, met with representatives from the Spanish Cooperation Agency and from the universities of São Paulo, Santa Catarina and Cantabia (Spain) to evaluate the partnership.

To Machado, the coastal mapping facilitates decision-making, and for this technical information is necessary. "It is strategic for the country", he stated.

Besides anticipating cases of erosion, climate change impacts and risk of landslides and floods, the initiative considers the use of the sea as a source of energy. The expectation in Spain is that, in 50 years, 20% of the country's energy source will be the sea.

In the first year of the partnership, a pilot-project was developed in Massuguaçu Beach, state of São Paulo, where eroded areas were examined. Based on this information, experts and managers will be able to work to reverse the damage.

The seminar will also discuss a system to prevent damage in cases of oil spills.
