With the participation of about 2,000 people, including scientists, civil society and politicians, the Second International Conference: Climate, Sustainability and Development in Semiarid Regions (ICID 2010) ended last Friday (August 20) with the release of the "Fortaleza Declaration: Bringing the Drylands into the Mainstream".
The document consists of 23 recommendations grouped into eight themes: Sustainable Development and Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities; Political Representation at Multiple Scales; Synergies among Global Environmental and Development Initiatives; Financing Climate-Sensitive Sustainable Development; Education for Sustainable Development; Knowledge and Information Exchange; Integrated Planning and Implementation of Development Strategies and Programs; and Responding to the Urgency.
According to Egon Krakhecke, secretary for Extractivism and Sustainable Rural Development at the Ministry of Environment, who attended the event in Fortaleza, the statement will guide governments, civil society organizations and productive sectors in implementing the appropriate actions in semiarid regions.
