Between May 18 and 21, about 200 researchers from Brazil and ten other countries will discuss experiences in forest management at the Symposium on Forest Management in the Amazon and at the celebration seminar of 30 years of research in the Tapajós National Forest. After discussions, the participants will point out priorities for studies on forest management in Amazonia. The event takes place in Santarém, Pará, and is promoted by the Brazilian Forest Service in partnership with Embrapa Eastern Amazon.

Society knows little about forest management, which may be one of the main alternatives for the sustainable use of forests and to fight deforestation. The purpose of the Symposium is to reinvigorate the debate on priority issues, opportunities and challenges of forest management in the region.

"The discussion of priorities will help to establish a greater cooperation between research institutions in the region, and may also consider the needs of other sectors interested in forest management, such as environmental agencies and the productive sector", says Joberto Freiras, Information Executive Manager at the Brazilian Forest Service.

Seminar - A seminar to commemorate 30 years of forest research in the Tapajós National Forest occurs simultaneously to the Symposium. The researches in the region began in 1975 and were conducted over the years by researchers and technicians from Embrapa Eastern Amazon.

The studies served as the basis for defining the parameters and the institutional structure for forest management in Amazonia, and were fundamental to the preparation of the current legislation on the subject.

To contribute to the debate, experts from five countries in Africa, Asia and South America will present the experiences in forest management in their regions. Researchers from the United Kingdom, Germany and France working on topics related to forest management in tropical countries will also participate in the event.
