The policy of control and prevention of deforestation in the Amazon, led by the federal government since 2004, is the main theme of a publication that the Ministry of the Environment presents at COP-15, which began this week in Copenhagen (Denmark).
In 28 pages, the publication details the successful efforts undertaken by the Brazilian government to address the causes of deforestation in the region, which enabled the country to achieve the lowest annual deforestation rate in history during the period of August 2008 to July 2009: 7,000 km2.
The publication also highlights other initiatives such as the National Plan on Climate Change (PNMC), the voluntary target to reduce by 80% deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon by 2020 and the implementation of the Amazon Fund, which together make up the Brazilian strategy to mitigate the emissions of greenhouse gases arising from the change of land use.
