The National Action Program to Combat Desertification of the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment (MMA) promotes, from November 23 to 25, a workshop to discuss the development of an image information system, which would allow the Brazilian, Portuguese and Mozambican authorities to quantify and monitor desertification processes. The meeting is being held at the National Institute of Semi-arid (Insa), in Campina Grande, Paraíba.
The system will enable the production of critical data that will be reported to the UNCCD (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification). The objective of Desertwatch, a project funded by the European Space Agency, is to develop a set of processing chains for producing updated maps of land occupation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid environments in the countries involved and to consolidate the most significant indicators of desertification. The ultimate goal is to design a software tool that can be used by the three countries in order to update all information relating to these processes.
The workshop is being attended by representatives from institutions such as the Portuguese Geographic Institute, MMA, Insa, National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), National Water Agency (ANA) and Embrapa Semi-arid.
