Last week, an event promoted by Brazilian ministries of the Environment and Foreign Relations brought together managers from Brazil and France to present a history of cooperation between the two countries, specially in the Amazon, as well as its results and perspectives. The event was held in the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, in Belém (Pará), last Thursday and Friday (August 13 and 14).
French-Brazilian cooperation was carried out through projects for combatting deforestation, for environmental fiscalization and for management of protected areas and water resources.
Mauro Pires, director of the MMA's Department for Coordination of Policies for the Amazon and Control of Deforestation, said that the event was "an opportunity to augment policies for combatting deforestation and crime and, at the same time, investing in science and technology and promoting sustainable development".
The seminar results were presented this week (August 17 and 18), in Itamaraty Palace, in Brasília, during the first meeting of the Joint Coordinating Committee responsible for implementing the Cooperation Protocol for the Sustainable Development of the Amazon Biome, signed by the governments of Brazil and France in December 2008.
